2009 Dodge Avenger SXT

|
Dodge Avenger SXT

The Dodge Avenger is certainly a vehicle that makes you reevaluate the entry level car market. Starting out at $21,500 the four door mini Charger may seem like a good deal, however after checking enough option boxes to make it a V6 powered Official Passenger Car of NASCAR complete with navigation and a set of stylish 18 inch wheels just like our fully loaded 2009 Avenger SXT, the price creeps up pretty close to the $30,000 mark. The Dodge Avenger is the smallest sedan in the Chrysler lineup and because of that it carries a few styling cues from its larger four door brother, the bold faced Charger, with touches like a squared off front end and bulging fender flares and a solid looking rear end.

Covered in a beautiful coat of Deep Water Blue Pearl paint our Avenger SXT came equipped with stain resistant cloth seats and a 2.7 Liter six cylinder engine mated to a four speed automatic transmission that made 187 HP while returning an estimated 19 MPG around town and as much as 27 MPG on the highway. Heavily optioned with features like a power everything including a sunroof, Chrysler’s Uconnect GPS with Sirius satellite radio, remote start and a cup holder that can either cool or warm its contents depending on what you wish, not to mention the $740 destination charge; a well equipped Avenger like this one will set you back a total of $27,955. Quite a bit more then you would expect to pay for Dodge’s smallest offering.

2010 Mazda2

Mazda2

The Japanese automaker Mazda has commenced production on their compact hatchback the Mazda2 at their AutoAlliance factory in Thailand. Although the diminutive city car may not seem so impressive, you have to remember that it did win a few car of the year awards in its previous form and that the new car comes with an all new enticing feature, an even wider grin. The new Mazda2’s smiley face is not only more inviting than the generation that came before but it also gives the 2010 model year small city car a fun face that adds to the Japanese automaker’s Zoom-Zoom spirit of car building.

Just like the new MX-5, the Mazda2 has undergone a design refreshening and features a new front bumper that incorporates a set of larger larger vertical air intakes as well as the new happy face five point lower grill that is going into all of Mazda’s fun to drive vehicles. A new Mazda2 also gives hope that a new open air roadster inspired version could be in the works, especially after consumers have adjusted to the new car’s playful front end. As for now, these images are pretty much all we have to go on, but we promise to get back to you with more details as they become available.

Saab rolls out new 2010 9-5 sedan commercial

|

Saab’s reinvention under Spyker continues to go full steam ahead with a new commercial for the brand’s new flagship sedan, the 2010 9-5. The car, which is expected to make its way to dealerships in the coming months, is already being aggressively hyped by Saab as it aims to, once and for all, turn the corner after a year that saw the company come this close to being axed by General Motors.

Saab hopes that the 2010 9-5 will be the first of many Saab vehicles that will slowly inch its way back into the US market in the foreseeable future. Judging by how we’ve pegged the 2010 9-5, these guys are off to a good and promising start. Let’s all hope that they keep the momentum going from here on out.

As a reminder, the Saab 9-5 comes with a range of engines beginning with a 1.6-liter engine that can produce up to 180 hp and ending with a 2.8-liter turbo V6 engine that puts out approximately 300 hp. All engine choices come with a six speed transmission in a stick-shift or semi-automatic.

Two thumbs down for the Wally Supercar Concept by Matthew Hockham

Two thumbs down for the Wally Supercar Concept by Matthew Hockham

We know that the name Wally whispered in the ears of yacht enthusiasts everywhere will send goosebumps up and down their arms in response to the sheer pleasure that name conjures up. And as we can respect the Wally name in terms of yachts, we have to wrinkle up our nose in distaste for the supercar modeled after the specific yacht design.

Apparently, Mr. Matthew Hockham, a UK industrial designer, decided that transferring the Wally design concept over to a supercar would be a good idea. He was horribly, horribly wrong. Although on paper, the sharp edges, black glass surfaces, and hi-tech gray tones sound absolutely marvelous; on the supercar, they simply fall flat. Designed to include the concept of a shooting brake model and sidelines inspired from the 118 WallyPower yacht, the look was supposed to say futuristic and classy. Ummm, how about weird and unpractical? The only redeeming factor this supercar may have is that the interior is made of carbon fiber and teak, again following along the lines of the Wally brand. The only problem with that is the supercar sounded good on paper too, so we can’t be too confident that the interior won’t leave us disappointed as well.

  1. Look, we know that some people are going to go nuts over this concept, exclaiming how cool it is. More power to them. If you like it then by all means, please enjoy. All we have to say is that we are glad this will probably not see production ever. We’d be much happier with the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport or the coming Porsche 918 Spyder; just to name a couple of the supercars we’d rather have.

1970 Porsche Gulf-JWA Le Mans sold for nearly $4 million

Taking a look at the sales from this past weekend’s Bonhams & Butterfields auction, one would never be able to tell that we are currently in a financial crisis throughout the world. For example, a 1970 Gulf-JWA Le Mans 917K Coupe was sold for a record amount of $3,965,000.

The auction consisted of an astounding 102 cars as well as one airplane and one boat from the three collections of Michael Amalfitano. Out of the 104 pieces up for sale, 74% of them were sold during the auction which was a much better percentage than originally expected from the auctioneers. In total, the Bonhams & Butterfields auction raised a total of $18.6 million of which about $4 million was attributed to the Porsche 917.

"We are very honored to have been selected to offer these incredible motorcars at auction," says Mark Osborne, head of Bonhams’ Motoring Department. "We are very pleased with the results and the satisfaction of having met or exceeded the expectations of our discerning and growing clientele."

Press release after the jump.

Next Jaguar X-Type to be built on XK platform

Next Jaguar X-Type to be built on XK platform

Jaguar has already confirmed three new models for the next four years, and a new generation X-Type is one of them. The X-type will be offered in both sedan and station wagon versions, and will attempt to take on models like the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Okay, so that’s all old news, but we do have some new details to report. The latest reports surrounding the sedan suggest that the next X-Type will be built on the next-generation XK platform. The decision for the use of this platform comes down to money - as these things usually do. Jaguar’s goal is to keep the price of the X-type in the $40K area.

The exterior design will follow the same language as the new XJ sedan, but the interior will most likely offer lower quality materials and less technology. Under the hood, the future RWD sedan will offer small-displacement turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines to continue Jaguar’s focus on improving fuel economy, especially in the European market.
